
Local Produce Market Report Released
The Welsh Government, working with the food and drink sectors have strategically put together a number of Cluster Groups. These clusters have been developed to maximise economic growth within Wales bringing together like-minded people, with the key objective of helping businesses to collaborate and achieve common business aims. The “Horticulture Cluster” is managed by Lantra on behalf of Welsh Government Food Division.
The purpose of this cluster is to:
- Discover new and untapped opportunities that will strengthen horticulture supply chains in Wales
- Introduce like-minded businesses and explore new ways to collaborate
- Strengthen connections with industry suppliers, buyers and other related stakeholders
- Connect with horticultural businesses seeking new opportunities in the Welsh food & drink sector
- Promote products, services and collaboration opportunities and support best practice
- Foster new partnerships that will meet the needs of businesses within the horticultural supply chain
The Local Produce Markets Report was commissioned by the Horticulture Cluster to:
- Support growers to access local and regional markets
- Equip horticultural producers with practical tools and information to help them sell through local produce markets.
- Promote sustainable routes to market and encourage low-carbon, localised food systems by reducing food miles and increasing direct-to-consumer models.
- Bridge the gap between producers and consumers and help growers gain a greater understand of customer needs, marketing techniques, and pricing strategies that work in a local setting.
- Strengthen local food economies and stimulate community wealth-building and retain value within Welsh regions by supporting direct sales and short supply chains.
- Inform policy and stakeholders
- Provide a resource for local authorities, market managers, and community organisers on how to facilitate and promote local produce markets.
- Demonstrate Effective Examples and showcase successful case studies and practical examples from across Wales and the UK to inspire and guide others.
